Caught the Big One!

Great Blue Heron was hunting along the edges of Carillon Stonegate Pond this afternoon.

Typically they grab a frog or small fish. Today, this bird speared a sizable small mouth bass!

The Great Blue Heron struggled to figure out how to enjoy its catch. It dropped the fish on the ground and speared it again. It repeated this two more times.

Finally, the Great Blue Heron went all-in and got the fish head first into its mouth. Slowly it worked the fish in and eventually swallowed the bass.

For the next hour or so, the Great Blue Heron simply stood still - as we might do after a large Thanksgiving feast. Eventually, dinner settled in and the Great Blue Heron flew away to the rookery a few miles to the north.
