FISHING IS EASY, SWALLOWING IS WORK!

This Great Blue Heron successfully caught a sunfish on Carillon Stonegate Pond.

But once the fish was speared, what next?

The Great Blue released the fish from its bill and dropped into the pond before grabbing again.

This started that long work of swallowing. As my swallow therapist would say - "take several hard swallows"! The Great Blue did exactly that and slowly was able to move the fish down its throat and into its gut. Notice fish is head first into the throat - why is that?

Take a hike and see what you can find – and identify!
